Talking Safety, Solutions, and the Future of Trucking on Trucking Sense with Charles Gracey

I recently had the opportunity to join Charles Gracey on his XM show Trucking Sense to talk about some of the most pressing issues in trucking today. Our conversation covered a lot of ground, from tragic crashes to the future of hiring, but it all centered on one thing: building a safer, stronger industry.
Lessons from the Recent Florida Semi-Truck Crash
We began by discussing the recent semi-truck crash in Florida that made national headlines. Whenever an incident like that happens, it shakes not only the families and communities involved but also the entire trucking industry. Crashes of that scale raise tough questions: What could have been done differently? What preventative measures can fleets take?
On the show, I shared that while regulations and compliance play a role, the real key is proactive safety culture. It starts with hiring practices, driver training, and ongoing coaching, not just reacting after something has already gone wrong.
Why Hiring Young Drivers Matters
One topic I was especially excited to discuss was the Safe Driver Apprenticeship Program (SDAP). A lot of people see hiring younger drivers as risky, but I believe the opposite can be true if done the right way.
With SDAP, fleets can bring in younger talent and train them from day one in the right habits, expectations, and safety culture. Instead of inheriting bad habits from years on the road, these drivers can be molded into the professionals the industry desperately needs.
If we want to solve the driver shortage while also raising the bar for safety, investing in younger drivers is one of the smartest steps we can take.
The Wattsmen Safety Subscription
Charles also gave me the chance to talk about the Wattsmen Safety Subscription which is our ongoing solution for fleets that want compliance and safety handled without the stress. For a flat monthly fee, fleets get access to our expertise, resources, and support.
It’s designed to take the guesswork out of safety management so owners and managers can focus on running their business. From compliance checks to safety policy development, it’s about keeping companies off the FMCSA radar and drivers on the road.
New Class: Coaching Drivers the Right Way
Finally, we talked about something I’m really excited about, our newest class on how to effectively coach truck drivers.
Too often, coaching gets confused with criticizing or disciplining. Real coaching is about building trust, correcting behavior without resentment, and helping drivers succeed long-term. This class is built to give managers and safety directors the tools they need to have those tough conversations in a way that actually works.
Looking Ahead
It was an honor to be on Trucking Sense with Charles Gracey, and I’m grateful for the chance to talk about these important issues. The Florida crash was a sobering reminder of what’s at stake, but conversations like this give me hope that with the right training, hiring practices, and safety programs, we can prevent future tragedies.
At Wattsmen, our mission is simple: keep drivers safe, keep companies compliant, and keep freight moving.
If you’d like to learn more about the Wattsmen Safety Subscription or our upcoming driver coaching class, reach out. I’d love to share how we can help your fleet.
